A Second Chance for *Mung | Refugee Healthcare in Malaysia

The Accident
*Mung, a Burmese refugee, was walking home one evening when a speeding motorcycle struck him in a hit-and-run accident. The impact threw him to the ground, leaving him with a scraped knee and several head injuries — the worst being a deep cut that partially severed his ear.
That night, he sought help at the nearest clinic. The doctor cleaned and stitched what he could, but the wound required multiple follow-up visits to heal properly. For Mung, who had no stable income, the thought of frequent medical appointments felt impossible.
The Struggle of Refugee Healthcare in Malaysia
Each visit meant another cost. With no insurance or steady work, Mung’s options were limited — like many refugees in Malaysia, healthcare remained out of reach. Desperate for help, he turned to his community leader, *Thang San, who brought him to Autrui Clinic.

The Healing Journey
At Autrui Clinic, we believe that no one should be denied care because of income or status. Mung began his recovery under the care of our doctors with support from Dr. James Kok, an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. Through Autrui365, our subsidised primary care programme, his treatment was made affordable. Over the course of 6 subsidised visits, the team carefully stitched, cleaned, and monitored his wound until his ear was restored.
Without the subsidy, Mung would not have been able to continue his treatment — but with consistent care and compassion, he made a full recovery.
Restoring Dignity
Today, Mung can hear properly again. He has returned his daily routine and continues to strive for a better life.
His story is one of healing, but also of hope — a reminder that accessible healthcare can restore not only the body but also one’s dignity.
Why Mung’s Story Matters
Many refugees and stateless individuals in Malaysia face similar struggles when illness or accidents strike. Through partnerships, subsidies, and volunteer doctors, Autrui Global continues to make care possible for those who need it most.
